Exams & Cleanings (Periodontal Maintenance)
Everyone should have their teeth checked and cleaned at least twice a year, though we may recommend more frequent visits depending on the conditions of your gums and teeth. Regular dental exams and cleaning visits are essential to prevent dental problems and maintain the health of your teeth and gums. At these visits, your teeth are cleaned and checked for cavities. Additionally, there are many other things that are checked and monitored to help detect, prevent, and maintain your dental health.
- Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
- Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
- Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
- Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
- Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for sometime and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line, and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
- Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease
- Teeth polishing: Removes stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during toothbrushing and scaling
Dental Radiographs
Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs) is essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
Fluoride
By having fluoride treatment, you prevent the loss of minerals from tooth enamel, effectively strengthening areas that may be weakened by cavities and decay. Fluoride also prevents cavity-causing bacteria from building up, as well as putting a stop to acid attacks that destroy the teeth. Fluoride treatments are more effective with good oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and regular visits to the dentist.
Restorations (fillings)
A composite (tooth colored) filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then filled with a composite filling.
There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth. Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today. Because composite fillings are tooth colored, they can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or more visible areas of the mouth.
As with most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.

Crowns
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth coloured crown) are the most popular. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and colour of your teeth, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

Bridge
A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is an excellent way to replace missing teeth.
There are several types of bridges. You and your dentist will discuss the best options for your particular case. The “traditional bridge” is the most popular type and is usually made of porcelain fused to metal. This type of bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.
Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years; however, they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.

Root Canal Therapy
Also termed "endodontics", root canal therapy is a specialized branch of dentistry that deals with the complex structures found inside the teeth. The Greek word “Endodontics” literally means “inside the tooth” and relates to the tooth pulp, tissues, nerves, and arterioles. Endodontists receive additional dental training after completing dental school to enable them to perform both complex and simple procedures, including root canal therapy.
Historically, a tooth with a diseased nerve would be removed immediately, but endodontists are now able to save the natural tooth in most cases. Generally, extracting the inner tooth structures, then sealing the resulting gap with a crown restores health and functionality to damaged teeth.

Extraction
An extraction means to have a tooth removed, usually because of disease, trauma or crowding. If you need an extraction, your dentist will first numb the area to lessen any discomfort. After the extraction, your dentist will advise you of what post extraction regimen to follow. In most cases a small amount of bleeding is normal. Your mouth will slowly fill in the bone where the tooth root was through the formation of a blood clot.
Night Guard
Teeth grinding or clenching, (bruxism), is a common problem that can lead to tooth damage, muscle soreness, sleeplessness, earaches and headaches. Night guards, (occlusal splints), are custom fit appliances that are worn during sleeping to prevent or minimize bruxism.
Sports Guard
Sports mouth guards are precisely fitted appliances used to protect teeth and reduce the intensity of sport-related concussions. While sports mouth guards can be purchased off-the shelf, custom made appliances have the advantage of a more precise fit and will stay in place better. They are less bulky to wear and are available in different colours
Teeth Whitening
In most cases, the natural colour of teeth is within a range of light greyish-yellow shades. Teeth naturally darken with age and their appearance can be affected by the accumulation of surface stains acquired from the use of tobacco products and the consumption of certain foods or drinks.
Although teeth are not naturally meant to be completely white, many of us want a brighter smile. Responding to this desire, we offer a number of in-office and at-home options.
